On the morning of July 7 local time, the commencement ceremony of Juba International Airport Improvement and Expansion Project Phase I, South Sudan was held at the project site. Kiir – the President of South Sudan, representative of the Airport Project client, Bian Zhiqiang –political counselor of Chinese Embassy in South Sudan, and Li Yi – Vice President of CHEC attended the commencement ceremony.
At the ceremony, President Kiir delivered a speech. He pointed out that the preparation of Juba International Airport Improvement and Expansion Project started in 2005 and that the smooth and punctual commencement of this project benefited from the support of the Chinese government and Export-Import Bank of China for the infrastructure construction of South Sudan, which made him confident in the prospect of the project and he hoped that CHEC could effectively complete this project with a high quality. Li Yi, on behalf of CHEC, delivered a speech. He said that CHEC, as a Chinese state-owned enterprise and a responsible contractor, would try its best to ensure the smooth implementation of this project and build this project to be a benchmarking project constructed by the Chinese enterprises in South Sudan. At the ceremony, Li Yi also, on behalf of CHEC, donated 100,000kg food stuffs and 5,000L cooking oils to the government of South Sudan to relieve its current famine, which fully showed the enterprise spirit and the sense of responsibility of CHEC.
The contract amount of Juba International Airport Improvement and Expansion Project Phase I is about USD 160 million and the construction period is 30 months; it is the first project CHEC undertook in South Sudan. Its smooth implementation is of great significance in exploring the market of South Sudan. Besides, it will greatly improve the function of Juba International Airport, effectively enhance the capacity of flying area, number of the airplane gates, capacity of the terminal area and landside traffic guarantee and meet the demand of strategic development of South Sudan.
